  • Final boss (special level)

Golden Ears Trail: West Canyon parking lot to summit of North Ear. Hiking trail only (12 kilometres; suggested time: 7 hours; elevation change: 1,500 metres). Follow the West Canyon Trail from the parking lot to Alder Flats. Beyond Alder Flats the trail switchbacks upward on an old logging road then heads steeply uphill to Panorama Ridge. Most of the elevation gain is made in this stretch. Listen for the nasal squeak of pikas in the rock slides. Impressive view of Pitt Lake to the west and mountains to the east and north are possible from Panorama Ridge. The ascent of the North Ear is made from the left (east) side across a permanent snowfield. Extreme caution is advised and proper equipment is recommended. Drinking water may be scarce in dry weather between Alder Flats and the snowfield.

The round trip to Golden Ears is an overnight expedition for all but the fittest hikers.

Overnight camping areas are located at Alder Flats and on Panorama Ridge around the mountain shelter which, itself, can accommodate up to 8 people. Expect snow on Panorama Ridge into July. This trail is long and strenuous and should only be attempted by experienced, well-equipped backcountry travellers. No open fires are permitted in the backcountry.

    Where Is the Love
By Black Eyed Peas, Justin Timberlake

    This past weekend...

I had a few inspirational moments... without going into too much details:

    • I've still got a long way to go (ok maybe that's not new hahaha...).
    • Remember whom do I answer to, and what He is expecting.
    • There's a lot of people around me who needs more caring.
    • The opposite of "love" is not "hate", but "like", because you "like" the good things only, but you "love" regardless of the bad things.
    • Sometimes, people just need to rant and have someone to just listen to them. No need to try to say anything in response.
    • The only regrets are when you didn't do everything that you could've done.
    • I'm weaker than I already know.

That's a lot to digest over a weekend... but thankfully, He gave me the time and energy to do so.

  • The Giant Rock

There was a giant rock in the mountains, standing proudly among other smaller rocks. It has a smooth surface that shines brightly under the sun.

“Surely, I was created to provide shades to all the animals in the mountains, so that they may some rest under my shadow,” thinks the giant rock.

One day, the giant rock was found by some men working in the mountains, and was brought into the city.

“Surely, these men are admirers of my beauty, and want to put me in the middle of the city for all the people to appreciate,” thinks the giant rock.

But the giant rock was brought inside a building. There was no admirer to gaze upon its shininess under the sun. Then the giant rock saw a man with a mallet and a chisel.

“Surely, this man will carve beautiful poems on me, so that I can be displayed for all the artists in the world.”

But the man did not carve words on the giant rock. Instead, he started taking big chunks off it, changing its shape into a particular form.

“Surely, this man will make me a beautiful sculpture, to be put among other great sculptures of the world.”

But the man did not make a sculpture. In fact, more men came and start throwing away the parts that were sliced off the giant rock. As more and more of the giant rock were removed, the giant rock was no longer shiny. It became neither giant nor smooth. The rock was unhappy and mad. It did not understand what these men were doing, nor did it understand why it was chosen to be destroyed. The giant rock only knows that all its prides were thrown away along with the parts of it that were removed.

Then finally, with another careful hit on the chisel, the man with the mallet screamed with joy, “I’ve found it! I’ve found the diamond inside the giant rock!”

  • Good news?

Do you share your good news with your friends right away?

    I would.

And at the same time, I expect the same from my friends.

I remember I used to get really upset when I found out about my friend's good news from a 3rd source. I felt hurt. I found myself saying, "What am I to you?" I was frustrated that my friends don't treat me the same way that I treat them. (Perhaps this has to do with the fact that I grew up with the mentality of treating others as I want to be treated.)

And then, I learned to see it differently: perhaps how the others treat you is how they want to be treated.

Then spawn a lot of evil and selfish thoughts.

But over the years, I learned yet another perspective: everyone has a different metric system: some people treat mere acquaintances with upmost sincerity, while others don't even trust their closest friends (if they even have any). I also learned to hold little expectation from friendships, and embrace everything that I get in return, because I'm just 1 out of the hundreds of people that each of my friends would encounter. If they don't have enough space for me in their life, it's only a normal thing; but if they make the effort to reserve a spot for me, then I shall do the same for them.

But perhaps, another 10 years down the road, I'll once again see things differently.
